The Social Travel Revolution

Travel & Surf

Travelling and Surfing are two activities which take place in two different domains. We travel around the world, and we surf the World Wide Web. Travelers like Backpackers do this at the same time. This blog post is about how tourists travel and surf…

The Social Travel Revolution

The digital uprising led the whole world to have unprecedented change in technology. Consequently, the growth of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the last two decades has dramatically renovated the tourism industry.  Indeed, New Media has changed the world and in particular, it has changed the way of travelling around the world. Today, thanks to innovations in technology and high-speed internet, tourists can book their own flight and hotels online, choose to stay in a stranger’s house, and rather than entering that unfamiliar restaurant with anxiety, search online reviews on their mobile while connected to the hotel Wi-Fi.

Now more people are travelling than ever before, and technology has also given us more information on the place we are going than ever before.

In the digital age, we’ve become a generation of Digital Travelers who plan, manage and book travel online.

Today, most of the hotels offer free Internet access (included in the price of accommodation), if you have a notebook in your backpack. And so it wasn't a big surprise that recently the term of a backpacker has changed to flash packer.

Defining Social Media for Travelers

Social Media has been defined as the social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques, which allows the creation and exchange of user-generated content. The most wonderful factor of social media is we can access it anytime, anywhere from any device.

Thanks to Social Media services like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Google Buzz or blogs, it’s much easier to communicate and keep in regular contact with the home base and travel buddies we met on the road, while travelling. Especially for the people at home, it’s a good way to follow your travel route, as they know where you are, and as a result they will feel much more relaxed.

Mobile on the Go...

It is also changing every phase of hospitality – from finding a hotel, to checking in, to unlocking your door and personalizing your stay. As travel is inherently mobile, travelers expect to use their mobile devices to enrich their travel experiences.

How many? How fast?

Ii is really important to look at the statistics of mobile phone use by travelers to understand how this device has embed with travel industry. 85% of leisure travelers use their smart phone while travelling, while 30% have used mobile apps to find hotel deals. 29% of travelers book flights using mobiles. Further 40% travelers use social network sites to share their travel experiences.

Thus, we can see the magnitude of the social travel revolution is really fascinating and we can assume that more extraordinary changes going to took place in this digitized society in near future.
